World Peace and Ear Plugs

In terms of world peace, John Lennon had it right when he suggested that all we need is love.  Before world peace is possible we have to achieve peace in our individual worlds. I looked at my own world for solutions.  I homeschool my four bouncy, musical, noisy kids.  I gave birth to the youngest three in about a two-and-a-half years. Silence is rare and golden.  If you want to make the musician in your life crazy, just fill their head with external noise so they can't think their own thoughts, finish a musical line, compose a song, or write a lyric.  Multiply that by four, and that is my world.

So, years ago, in order to stay off the 10 o'clock news, I searched for ethical, moral and legal solutions to cut out the noise. The iPod was the newest thing, but I was cheap and didn't want to buy something I knew would be replaced by yet another iPod in less than 12 months.  I loaded music onto a cheap little mp3 player and turned up the Enya to cut out the sound around me.  It sounds like a lovely solution, but ear buds are not designed to seal the ear canal, and the human toddler's voice is designed to shatter most physical matter.  Not only did I have Enya sailing away in my head, I had three toddlers competing to be "The Voice" in our household.  Between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. I had no peace.

I needed something industrial strength.  I found peace in industrial ear plugs that seal off the ear and only allow a marginal amount of sound. I'm more peaceful, the kids are more peaceful because I am not constantly shushing them.  Overall, our home is more peaceful, my marriage gets more attention because I'm not worn out by sound bombs and mental fatigue...my world is more peaceful. My world is more peaceful.  Did I mention my world is more peaceful? Perhaps the cumulative effect of global ear plug use will be greater world peace? You never know.  Nothing else is working. While it is true that all we need is love, for some of us it is really hard to feel that in a state of sound overload. For me all I need is earplugs. What brings you peace?
